ATS Carbon LSD - next generation LSD

lsd carbon Carbon LSD standard
lsd carbon Carbon LSD Type Street
hybrid Carbon LSD Carbon Hybrid

Cornering innovation - it yields the ideal line desired by the driver

Unrivaled controllability and smoothness for the fastest lap time

< For Street, Track days, Road Racing, Autocross, & Drifting >

By utilizing the CC composite discs, the ATS carbon LSD posses the superior transitional characteristics from free to differential lock, enabling control that feels quite natural.

Principal characteristics of the Carbon LSD

* Gentle transitional characteristics that yield ease of handling from free to lock
* Small degree of slipping which provide a greater flexibility
* Super durable
* Stable differential lock performance which is unaffected by oil temperature changes
* Quiet operation without chattering noise
* Very high adaptability to many LSD oils from different manufacturers

Important - it is very important to monitor the differential oil temperature to keep it under 150 C degree (302 F). Continued driving with the differential temperature above that point might cause the carbon chips peeled off.

** Evolution of ATS carbon LSD

2001 - First carbon LSD (currently referred as Spec 1) was released. With the mild engagement, zero noise, and longer durability (it worked with the initial torque as low as 2 kg.m), it suprised the industry. Spec 1 - 8 kg.m initial torque.

2007 - The internal metal disc was newly designed with grooves and an improved coating for a longer product life and for reducing the metal/carbon particles.

2010 - The carbon LSD Spec 2 was introudced. With the higher initial torque of 10 to 11kg.m, the Spec 2 provided a better throttle response for a faster lap time.

2011 - The carbon LSD Spec 3 and Spec 4 were introduced. The initial torques were furthere raised to 15kg.m and 20kg.m for the Spec 3 and the Spec 4 respectively. The high initial torque generated a lightening fast throttle response without causing much under steer. (This level of initial toque cannot be used for a metal LSD). The ultra smoothness of the engagemnet is intact even at the high initial torque.

2012 - The Carbon LSD Spec 5 was introduced for several 87 mm diameter LSDs. The number of the carbon disc was increased from 6 to 8. The Spec 5 had the total internal disc of 16 compared to the standard carbon LSD 12 for the ultimate performance and durability.

2015 - Type DD was added to the line-up. The LSD case went through a major design change for a much better oil circulation. The type DD LSD case is used for both carbon and metal LSDs.

Note: The carbon LSD Spec 3 to Spec 5 are not available for all the models.

Carbon Hybrid LSD

The super fast throttle response Spec 3 to Spec 5 are not avaialble for all the models. For a driver who likes the smooth/quiet engagement of carbon LSD and would like to have a higher initial torque for the models for which Spec 3, 4, 5 are not available, ATS recommend the Carbon Hybrid LSD.

Carbon Hybrid replaces 2 of the carbon friction discs with the metal friction discs. The intial torque is raised to about 13 to 13.5 kg.m. The noise level also increases a notch but it is much quieter than the metal after the break in.

Some Spec 3, Spec 4 are more expensive than the Spec 1. The Carbon Hybird LSD is also a very good alternative in that situation with its price lower than the Spec 1 carbon LSD.

ATS carbon LSD has evolved to Spec II and Spec III in 2010.

The original carbon LSD got a significant improvement toward a perfect LSD. The differential lock is very effective even at a very low 2 kg initial torque as long as the both wheels are on the groud. However, the initial torque has very close relationship with the LSD's responsiveness to your throttle and steering input. With a higher initial torque and the ability to maintain the initial torque longer, Spec II and Spec III can provide an incredible response performance.
